Porsche unveiled their new Boxter at the Geneva Motor Show. It is much improved with it’s new lightweight exterior, weighing a great deal less. As expected there is also a great deal more power in the car.

35kg less

Porsche said that the latest Boxter will weigh a significant 35kg less than the current model. Naturally this will make the car more fuel efficient as well as faster.

Subtle but great improvements

Porsche have not gone over the top in terms of the upgrade. The new Boxter is a refreshed version but subtle improvements. The sports car giants clearly wanted to keep the car’s foundations yet ensure that important components were improved.

The car now comes with a much longer wheelbase to cater for the larger sized wheels. The Porsche Boxter will get 18 inch wheels with the Boxter S getting 19 inch wheels.

7 inch colour screen

Inside the car comes a brand new 7 inch colour touch screen which looks like a great feature to have. The layout of the car is said to be inspired from the Porsche Carrera GT hypercar which went on sale on 2004 to 2006.

Faster than the old model

The Chief of Porsche Operations Matthias Muller spoke at the Geneva Motor Show to the car magazine Auto Express saying how much the car has improved. His exact words were “This new Boxster is capable of lapping the Nurburgring in seven minutes and 58 seconds – that’s 12 seconds faster than the previous model. With the roof up it’s also 50 per cent quieter.”

Major engine changes

One area that did receive a wholesale change was the engine department. Here the previous 2.9 litre engine is replaced by an even smaller 2.7 litre engine. The power has increased however by 10 BHP, meaning the engine can achieve 261 BHP in total. The Porsche Boxter S will keep the 3.4 litre flat six engine gaining an extra 5 BHP with the car now able to reach 311 BHP.

Start Stop technology will be included in both vehicles to help keep economical values as high as possible.

Acceleration

The car hits 0 – 62 MPH in only 5.7 seconds which is faster than the current model by a tenth of a second. Upgrading to the Boxter S model will let you reach 0 – 62 MPH in just 5 seconds which is a great improvement of two tenths.
