The month of March was not expected to be this good for Europe’s largest car manufacturer. They managed to sell a fantastic 37,704 cars in that month alone. Year on year that represents a 3.1 per cent increase. Year to date figures are up too. So far in 2013 Volkswagen have sold 98,178 which represents a sales increase of 4 percent when compared to 2012 figures. Those sales figures are so good that it represents their best performance since the year 1973.
The Jetta Sedan has been Volkswagen’s best seller, contributing 12,872 sales. The coupe and the convertible Beetle have dramatically increased by 107 per cent. 4,082 vehicles were sold in March alone. So far this year the Beetle has sold 10,000 to date. The Volkswagen Passat and Tiguan sales have also increased over the month of March. Surprisingly, sales of the Golf had fallen by 21 per cent.
Johnathon Browning, the President of Volkswagen America was outspoken about the company’s performance over the last month in saying “Last month marked our 31st consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases and our strongest March in 40 years. While we are cautious in terms of economic outlook, we expect to see continued growth at a moderate pace in the months ahead.”
In other news the Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSI will be released in India. It will be released on the 25th April.
Coming with a brilliant 1.2 litre TSI engine, this will act as a replacement to the now discontinued 1.6 litre engine. The engine pushes out 104 BHP with a peak torque of 175 Nm. The four cylinder turbo engine combines well with a DSG automatic dual clutch. 6 and 7 speeds are both available but there has been no confirmation of which one will indeed be used.
There will also be a GT badge coming with the car, which will have a sporty body kit too. Driving enthusiasts will be encouraged to opt for this version. Rivals will include the Fiat Grande Punto and the Toyota Etiod Liva Sportivo in India.
