Great news for Volkswagen fans! Speaking at the recent launch of the new Polo compact, Company CEO, Herbert Diess, confirmed that the car-maker is finally to build a new Microbus. This time however, it’s going to be electric.
“Emotional cars are very important for the brand. We are selling loads of Beetles still, particularly in US markets. But we will also have the Microbus that we showed, which we have recently decided we will build,” Diess said.
This news will have the multitudes of VW enthusiasts salivating, especially the ones who have been desperate to buy a modern, updated version of the classic VW Microbus, but have only been tantalised by a never ending line of un-buyable concepts.
In many ways it makes sense for the new Microbus to be put on an EV platform because you don’t have to put the engine in the front. Therefore, you can have the iconic, traditional VW boxy shape and the components that power the car distributed throughout the vehicle.
VW design boss, Oliver Stefani, said of the new Microbus: “We would like to bring this back because it fits so well to what the brand stands for: it’s emotional, it has functionality, it makes your life easier.”
Appealing to people’s heartstrings is a new approach for VW. In the wake of the diesel emissions scandal, the company needs to take steps to improve its image globally, and a throwback – albeit a very modern, electric throwback – to triumphs of yesteryear seems to be a good way to do that. The many Microbus fans won’t disagree.
