The 2016 Kennards Hire Rally Australia will mark the end of an era, as Volkswagen bids farewell and sails off into the sunset. Also saying their goodbyes will be the current generation of WRC cars before the all new 2017-spec is introduced.
Already both the Driver’s and the Manufacturer’s titles have been decided, so you’d be forgiven for thinking that triumphant driver Sebastien Ogier and VW would be taking things easy in Oz. Things have changed however, with Volkswagen wanting to end their time in the WRC on a high.
Throughout their time in the World Rally Championship, VW have been the dominant force, sweeping all before them as they won trophy after trophy. They’ll be hoping to end their time in the segment with the same type of performance that has come to represent their brand. From the point of view of the soon to be redundant drivers, the final rally will no doubt be acting as a suitable showcase to potential employers for next season.
It’s safe to assume that the newly crowned World Champion Ogiers inbox is already chock-a-block with offers, but his teammates Jari-Matti Latvalaand and Andreas Mikkelsen will have to show what they can do in the final race to make sure they have a drive for next season.
