The-VW-camper-van-is-back-and-this-time-its-electricIf you were to ask a random stranger to list their ten most iconic cars, it’s a good bet the VW camper van would be on it somewhere.

Loved by millions, the last edition of the people carrier was removed from production back in 2013. Since then, the various incarnations of the classic design have subsequently become even more of a collector’s item.

VW have some good news for the enthusiasts however, 2017 sees the return of the camper, although this time it’s called the I.D. Buzz. Look beyond the name however, and what’s just been revealed at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) 2017, is simply just a redesign of the true classic.

There are many parallels between the two, none more so than the sweeping colour scheme that creates the famous VW nose. The I.D. Buzz is a first-class reworking of the boxcar design that made the original camper can so loved around the world.

Despite the many looks to the past, the new offering is tech heavy and all-electric. VW states that the I.D. Buzz has a theoretical range of 600km and come complete with a fast charging ability, which allows it to be charged from 0-80 percent in just half an hour.

Naturally, the I.D. Buzz is still very much in the concept stage, so most of the proposed performance stats are still fairly hypothetical, but VW claims that it will launch with the most up to date autonomous driving abilities of the time.

Volkswagen is keen to progress with the car’s development and has earmarked a 2020 date for the commencement of production and for the self-driving features to go live in 2025.
